Blasted Mechanism
Blasted Mechanism are one of Portugal's most distinctive and innovative musical projects. Formed in 1995, the band has spent three decades challenging conventions through a unique fusion of alternative rock, electronic music and sounds inspired by musical traditions from around the world. Combining experimental compositions, original instruments, striking visual identities and powerful live performances, Blasted Mechanism have created an artistic universe that extends far beyond music.
More than a band, Blasted Mechanism are a collective of musicians, thinkers and inventors brought together by a shared desire to explore new creative territories. Their work connects ancestral sounds with contemporary technology, bringing music, visual arts, performance and conceptual storytelling into a single experience. Constantly evolving in sound, image and formation, they have established a singular place in Portuguese music while taking their distinctive vision to audiences beyond their home country.
three decades of evolution
Blasted Mechanism emerged in the Portuguese music scene in 1995, developing an identity that stood apart from the beginning. Their early work introduced audiences to a project defined by experimentation, unconventional imagery and a musical language that brought together electronic textures, rock energy and influences from different cultures.
In 1996, the band released their first EP, Balayashi, marking the beginning of a recording journey that would lead to their debut album, Plasma, in 1999. The following years saw the release of Mix 00 (2000) and Namaste (2003), the latter helping to expand their audience and establish their presence in the Portuguese music landscape.
Their breakthrough continued with Avatara (2005), which reached the top of the Portuguese album chart and achieved gold certification. The band followed this success with Sound in Light / Light in Sound (2007), an ambitious double-format release that reflected their interest in extending the musical experience beyond conventional album formats.
In 2009, Blasted Mechanism released Mind at Large, further exploring the relationship between music and technology through an innovative augmented-reality experience incorporated into the album artwork. The project demonstrated their ongoing commitment to experimentation and to finding new ways for audiences to interact with their artistic universe.
Their journey continued with Blasted Generation (2012) and Egotronic (2015), each contributing to the band's ongoing reinvention. In 2018, a new phase began with changes to the line-up and the arrival of vocalist Riic Wolf. This transformation led to New Militia (Live at NOS Alive'18), a live project documenting a new chapter in the band's evolution.
Across these different generations, Blasted Mechanism have consistently embraced change without abandoning the principles at the heart of their identity: artistic freedom, experimentation, collective creativity and a desire to challenge expectations.
the collective
Blasted Mechanism's current line-up brings together Valdjiu, Guitshu, Fred Stone, Ary, Riic Wolf and Winga, each contributing to the band's evolving musical and performative identity.
Valdjiu is one of the founding creative forces behind the project and is known for developing original instruments that help define its distinctive sound. Guitshu, who joined in 2008, contributes vocals and keyboards, while Riic Wolf, who became part of the band in 2018, brought a new voice and direction to its contemporary era.
Ary's bass playing and production work contribute to the band's musical foundations, while Fred Stone's drumming provides a powerful rhythmic dimension to its live performances. Winga, known for his work with percussion and the didgeridoo, returned to the band in connection with the 30th-anniversary celebrations, reconnecting the current generation with an important part of its history.
Together, the six musicians represent the continuing evolution of a project that has always embraced transformation as an essential part of its identity.
innovation beyond music
One of the defining characteristics of Blasted Mechanism is their approach to sound creation. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional instruments, the band has developed original instruments such as the Bambuleco and Kalachakra, alongside other experimental creations. These inventions reflect their interest in connecting ancestral musical influences with contemporary technology and new forms of expression.
Their visual identity is equally central to their artistic universe. Elaborate costumes, masks, symbolic elements and constantly evolving stage concepts have become integral to their performances, transforming concerts into immersive audiovisual experiences.
This philosophy has also extended into projects beyond the stage. In 2009, the band organised an event in the Azores that brought together thousands of fans for the presentation of Mind at Large. They also launched an environmental initiative involving fans in the planting of 4,000 trees in the Lezírias region. In 2012, the Blasted Generation project reinforced their interest in environmental awareness and collective responsibility.
In 2013, the band launched a crowdfunding campaign that attracted 1,200 supporters, helping fund new music and the development of a new generation of their elaborate stage costumes. These initiatives reflect a wider vision in which music becomes a meeting point for creativity, technology, community and ideas about the future.
recognition & achievements
Throughout their career, Blasted Mechanism have received significant recognition for their contribution to Portuguese music. In 2006, they won a Globo de Ouro in the Best Portuguese Band category, marking an important milestone in their history.
The band was also nominated three times for the MTV Europe Music Awards' Best Portuguese Act category, in 2003, 2005 and 2007. These nominations reflected their growing visibility and their distinctive position within Portugal's contemporary music scene.
Their commercial achievements include the number-one position reached by Avatara on the Portuguese album chart and its gold certification. Meanwhile, their willingness to experiment with new formats and technologies, particularly through Mind at Large, further established their reputation as an innovative musical project.
Beyond awards and sales, one of the band's most enduring achievements has been the creation of an artistic identity that remains recognisable while continually changing across generations.
international stages
& festivals
Blasted Mechanism's live performances have been central to their reputation. Since the early years of their career, they have brought their distinctive sound and visual universe to audiences in Portugal and abroad, appearing at major festivals and sharing stages with internationally recognised artists.
Their festival history includes Glastonbury in the United Kingdom, as well as Sziget Festival, Rock for People and Fusion Festival. In Portugal, they have performed at prominent events including Festival Sudoeste, Paredes de Coura, Vilar de Mouros and NOS Alive.
Their appearances at NOS Alive have marked several important moments in the band's evolution, including the presentation of new generations of their live show. The 2018 performance, in particular, became the basis for New Militia, documenting the band's reinvention and introducing a new chapter to their audience.
For Blasted Mechanism, the stage is more than a place to perform music. It is a space where sound, movement, imagery and technology converge, allowing the audience to enter a world that is unmistakably their own.
thirty years and beyond
The band's 30th-anniversary celebrations, which began in 2024 and continued through 2025, offered an opportunity to revisit three decades of music, transformation and creative exploration.
The celebrations included special concerts in Porto and Lisbon in April 2025, bringing former member Karkov and Winga into the anniversary performances. These moments honoured the people and experiences that helped shape the band's history while reaffirming the connection between its different generations.
Rather than simply looking back, Blasted Mechanism approached this milestone as a continuation of their journey. Their legacy is defined not only by the records they have released, the awards they have received or the stages they have played, but also by their determination to keep evolving.
Thirty years after their emergence, Blasted Mechanism remain a project driven by curiosity, imagination and the belief that music can create new ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Their story continues to unfold, shaped by the past but always looking towards what comes next.
